Alright, guys. I'm so excited to have Giselle here today on this episode. Giselle, as a Elevate 360 mastermind member, having so much fun with you this year and seeing you shine, I'm just really excited to talk about your zone of genius today and just where you are as the founder of the corporate immigration practice that you run. But first of all, just to make sure everybody just tunes in. Okay? This woman has done a kajillion Iron Mans. She is chiseled to the max, and she is a high performing attorney and business owner who's doing it all. And so you're running an incredible business. You're incredibly grounded in your health, but also you're full of smiles energetically.

Melissa Henault:

You're exuding energy. And from the outside looking in, just with what you're doing in business, one would think, how could she be so physically fit and so happy all at the same time and travel the world to do all of these Iron Mans. So, like, I just want everybody to just be turning the volume up to listen to this episode. So, Giselle, welcome to the burnout to all out podcast. I'm so excited to interview you and your journey in entrepreneurship today.

Gisele:

Thank you for having me. And thank you. I mean, Melissa, you started with me being an inspiration in some ways. You have been and you are an inspiration for so many of us. So I am like, this is precious. The this time together, I am so so grateful to be here and honor for the whole journey that I've been in with you.

Melissa Henault:

Yes. It's been a fun journey.

Gisele:

Well, let's start. Well, continue to be

Melissa Henault:

here. Yeah. And it's still going. The journey is is ahead. So, well, let's talk about the journey that you've been on. You're very niche, very specific with corporate immigration as an attorney working to really, really help find key talent globally to help companies really have the competitive edge in a global market today. How did you get into such a niche industry? Where in the world along your life journey did you decide this was your calling and this is what you needed to be doing?

Gisele:

So you talked about the zone of genius, and I've kind of thought about that. I mean, we all have ours, and I think mine is being uniquely me. There's nowhere in the world that can do corporate immigration the way I do Yeah. And combine health, wellness, mindfulness, holistic well-being is what I call it Mhmm.

Melissa Henault:

All

Gisele:

into one package and keep it going successfully together.

Melissa Henault:

Yes.

Gisele:

Some people are very awesome at being an immigration attorney or being very good at just health and which is great.

Melissa Henault:

But you're a badass at both.

Gisele:

I am I mean, that's what allows me to do what I do, really. So we can talk about some more, but how I got here. And that's what I'm thinking. I'm a unique unique person to do what I do. I was born in Cuba, immigrated from Cuba to Canada, not knowing at age 15 that we were leaving Cuba never to come back. I've never been back. Oh, wow. It's a door that I still wanna close.

Gisele:

I think it was 5 years ago or 6 that they started Havana marathon. Now that is on my bucket list. And that may be part that may be my way back to Cuba. But anyways, so that was part of the journey. So, first immigration, then Canada, landed there on Asyli, had nothing, nothing, nothing. Everything stayed on the plane because my parents had told me that we were going to Czechoslovakia as a gift. It was my 15th quinceanera birthday. And they didn't tell me when I was in Cuba that that was the case because I would've I really would would the plans would have have stopped right there.

Gisele:

I was sobering washed into the system. So we got to Canada. And for the 1st 3, 4 days, my parents kept on telling me that we had problems in our passports, and that's why we couldn't keep going. And eventually, the passport thing was gonna get fixed, and we were gonna get back on whatever other plane and dada dada. But that lasted for a little bit. And then I was like, mom, we're getting a little bit too settled. What's going on? And then they told me, well, Giselle, sorry. We didn't tell you, but we're here to stay.

Gisele:

And I was like, really? Well, I'm going to the Cuban embassy and I'm gonna tell them to take my time. That's how hard headed I was. I can imagine. My parents took turns at night for the 1st month just to make sure that I didn't escape. Wow. And went back to the embassy in the middle of the night. Yeah. They told me that after the fact.

Gisele:

Anyway, so it was it's rough. It's very rough to start all over again.

Melissa Henault:

Friendships and all the things at 15?

Gisele:

Language? Culture? Wow. I spoke no English, no French. All my friends were home. I mean, at 15 years old, my parents were not necessarily my best friends. So, it was rough. It was very, very hard. But that's what paves your way to who you become and also what helps me be the best immigration attorney that I can be because I've been there. I see.

Gisele:

I know the feelings from the immigration from the immigrants' perspective and also from the employer's perspective, and I'll get that to that in a minute. So, in Canada, settled, went to school, actually graduated from McGill University with a bachelor's degree in physical therapy.

Melissa Henault:

So you learned English

Gisele:

And French.

Melissa Henault:

And French at the age of 15 and then went to college

Gisele:

Miguel's English. In English. Yep. In Canada, in Montreal Mhmm. They don't allow you to choose your language when you first get there. They force you into the French system, which rightly so because everybody else would go into the English track. So I had to learn French first and then switch to English. Again, if you look at my notes, I had ever and I have notes in all kinds of languages, but that's that was part of the process.

Gisele:

Graduated from McGill, got married to my husband who was also my best partner. I mean, imagine everything that I've done in Charlotte and I told you probably miles of hiking and running and all that and he's been there with me the whole time and he actually planned it.

Melissa Henault:

That's all. He's always the one thing. Yes.

Gisele:

Yes. So, it's it's the partnership. So, then after a while, after being in Canada for a number of years, became a Canadian citizen and then I have family in the United States, in Miami, and we were coming south for vacation and I said to Jeff, let's can we switch that around and let's just live in Florida. Vacation in Canada. As a physical therapist, both of us Mhmm. It was easy to find jobs, like work visas.

Melissa Henault:

Well, the climate probably felt a little more like home as well. Yes. Absolutely. Absolutely.

Gisele:

Yeah. Yeah. So, came down to the United States on work visas as physical therapist and I did that for about a year and then just decided to get a DPT in physical therapy. I didn't want to continue that. I wanted, my entrepreneurial life was kind of calling on me. So I decided to first start an MBA and then switch to law. Did my law degree and I started practicing in medical malpractice and soon decided that's not my calling, that's not my passion. But medical malpractice because of my physical therapy degree kind of combined or aligned.

Gisele:

When I went for my US citizenship ceremony and the process, I saw a lot of other attorneys that were there with their clients, holding their hands, going through the process. I had attorneys that helped me be where I was. So, that had always been in my back pocket. This feels so much more and talking about impact. The impact that I can make on people's lives. And now I feel like I have such a direct impact into our economy and to our world globally Yes. Because I'm able to bring talent to the United States.

Melissa Henault:

Yes. And it's so cool because our listeners, if you get to see any of this video that will drop somewhere on social media, you can see Giselle's energy with her smile. And when we talked at the beginning of this podcast about how you have the energy to do them both, it's because you're truly aligned and passionate about what you do, and you see the through line to the impact that you're making. Yeah. And so it creates energy within you instead of sucking the energy from you.

Gisele:

Yeah. And we talked about how have you transformed yourself through this process. Mhmm. Put that a little bit of that in. Because as you know, it's never a linear line. Yeah. Yeah. It goes up and down, up and down.

Gisele:

And then, hopefully, the up is more than the downs. And that has been me. I mean, I started the practice 0. It was me and me. Yeah. I'm in a midsize firm, which I adore, and they have allowed me to grow this practice. Well, now it's 6 of us. Mhmm.

Gisele:

So, you know, you can but it's been a lot of work. Nothing is easy. People just kind of look from the outside and go, oh, that would love to do well. The process is a lot of work and it's a lot of meeting people that are doing it, that can inspire you, that can guide you, and that you came across my path that way and that has also propelled me and allowed me to be where I am. There was a part of me last year where I had a domino effect of people deciding to do other things and my staff kind of dwindled. And I wonder, is this really what I want to do? Because of everything that was going on. I have beautiful clients. I adore my clients.

Gisele:

And also the work that I do, again, allows me to support their vision and their mission. And they're all so phenomenal globally and nationally. And that also gives me the inspiration. So, last year, I was at a point where, like, okay. I can just decide to retire and go hiking Kilimanjaro or whatever. Right. To my to do list. I base Camp Everest.

Gisele:

But something within me said, no. No. No. No. You're not done here. Yeah. You have so much more to give to this world.

Melissa Henault:

Yeah.

Gisele:

Keep Everest on the back pocket. It will happen. But for now, figure out a way to create a space in your life. Yes. Find the right team again, which I have. I have now a beautiful beautiful beautiful tour team again. Yeah. And it's allowing me to settle have a good foundation Yeah.

Melissa Henault:

To kind of grow. Let's, like, double click into that for a minute because I think that you and I have had very parallel journeys in that sense. I've had an evolution in my team Mhmm. And even to this day. And what I've come to embrace and what I've witnessed out of you, and I don't know if you agree, but there are people who, in your company, will there's a sole contract that has an expiration date, and that's okay. Because people like you and I are like, we're going 90 miles an hour. Yep. And some people can't handle the next speed, and some people are there for the whole ride.

Melissa Henault:

I envision you as this, like, rocket ship just like I do myself. And the rocket ship is just like, you know, it's getting late to take off, and then it takes off and it's, like, shaking. And there's people in your copilots that are gonna stay, and they are there with you. And then there's people who you get to a certain altitude

Gisele:

That is

Melissa Henault:

and they're like, I'm the fuck out because they can't handle it. And I believe that this happens for us. Mhmm. I know that when you were in the thick of it last year and I was coaching you and I've been in the thick of it myself, you're just like, why me? What is happening? Maybe this isn't for me. But, really, the universe is clearing the path, clearing the energetic path for this rebirth of who you are becoming. Yeah. And you needed this new a team Yeah. To serve at this new level and new vision that you have.

Melissa Henault:

And it's okay that some people, their sole contract with you is over, and they've served you for that season. Yeah. Do you agree?

Gisele:

Absolutely, Melissa. And I again, this has been one of the biggest wouldn't say challenges. I think it's a growth experience. Yeah. In the past, I would have and I did. You know, when you're in the thick of it, it's like You

Melissa Henault:

can be triggered and yeah.

Gisele:

Why are they doing this to me? And then but now I'm like, well, no. There are people that are gonna we all have our own path. They don't have to follow mine. Right. And mine is a rocket ship. It's Right. You know? It's in and you have to be able I'm willing Mhmm. To go down that path.

Gisele:

Yeah. And if you're not, you know, it's not helping me or you That's

Melissa Henault:

right.

Gisele:

To be on that path.

Melissa Henault:

That's right. It's a blessing. This is something Sam has coached me on, is that it's you're keeping them from their own blessing by keeping them. It's a blessing to let them go for both of you.

Gisele:

But that's so hard. It's so hard to accept or understand

Melissa Henault:

Yeah.

Gisele:

When you're going through it. But that has been one of the biggest lessons from me working with you and your whole team Mhmm. That it's okay. Mhmm. It's okay. And and not only is okay, it must happen. Yeah.

Melissa Henault:

Yeah. And I know that you read some really good books that, like, were helping you in that journey too. I can't remember the name of that book, but it was like

Gisele:

the something manager was it's a Oh, dream manager?

Melissa Henault:

Dream manager. Good book. Okay. So this is so good. Well, so let's talk about the flip side of this, which is like the holistic aspect The ability to run such an incredible practice, serve so many from a heartfelt space, but also be in the most incredible shape and do some of the most epic races across the globe. Didn't you do a race in Antarctica, or am I making that up?

Gisele:

No. No. You did. Okay. Yeah. You're not making it up. I'm sorry. And, like, just marathon.

Melissa Henault:

So just for the listeners to know, Giselle got here to Charlotte. We're in a studio recording right now live. She got here a couple days early. I guess you brought your bike or did you rent? She brought her bike. She has literally she's seen the entire city. She's done, like, 40 miles on her bike. This is what she does. This is how she operates.

Melissa Henault:

She's in go mode. So let's talk about that holistic aspect of you and how it fuels you. And just let's just talk a little bit about it.

Gisele:

Sure. We talked about before, your zone of genius. And I think for me, it's that unique ability to blend and for me is necessary. My work, my professional work as a high end corporate immigration attorney and holistic well-being. Some people do either or. Mhmm. For me, that combination is essential for what I do. Mhmm.

Gisele:

It allows me to recharge. It allows I mean, I don't get energy lying on the beach.

Melissa Henault:

Yeah.

Gisele:

Even though I live in Florida. Me neither. It just doesn't some work with me. Yeah. Any for other people, that's their dream. Yeah. No. Put me at the top of Mount Everest.

Gisele:

Yeah. I will be in heaven. Put me down in Antarctica running a marathon and jumping, did a pole punch walk.

Melissa Henault:

I said,

Gisele:

I might might as well. You're there. What else did you do? But the pole

Melissa Henault:

plunge. Just within Antarctica. Yeah.

Gisele:

But that is that fuels me. It it also every single time I go out and I get away from my desk, gosh, I come back and all this ideas and all this energy that cannot develop while you're sitting behind a computer.

Melissa Henault:

Yes.

Gisele:

And not to say that I'm just like, yeah, I'm going. I mean, it's hard. I'm at we all are, I think, addicted to just the emails on the computer and blah blah blah. So it's hard to get away. Yeah. But every time I do, I'm like, why didn't you do this before? Yeah. Why don't you do this more often? Yeah. And again, it's something else that you are very good at teaching and coaching us on.

Gisele:

And you have to do more, and you're a perfect example too. I mean, most of you and you've done it. And I know it's also brought a whole perspective to your life Mhmm. That it's just I mean, my goal is to live to a 120

Melissa Henault:

That's right.

Gisele:

Yep. And healthy mind, body, spirit. And the only way that it's gonna get there and continue to provide impact and energy and empower the world Yeah. Is by staying as fit, I guess, a healthy fit as I can.

Melissa Henault:

And Right. Bodies build businesses. Bodies healthy bodies create more impact. You have the longevity. I love what you said about the ideas and the thoughts that you get when you're out there during your endurance sports. I know for me, it's been almost therapy for me in different scenarios. When I think back to any of my listeners who know my history, my father was an alcoholic. My sister suffers from mental illness.

Melissa Henault:

There are just a lot going on in my life when I was an adolescent and young adult. And one of my ways to cope was just to put on my running shoes and just go for miles and miles and miles. And I think it was one way for me to actually regulate my nervous system in a healthy way. But I also think about today, God forbid, when I'm training for a half marathon, my team because I need those new AI, like, Google glasses that you can, like, talk to. You know what I'm talking about? I get the best ideas about business when I'm on, like, a 15 mile ride.

Gisele:

Figure that out. I mean, that should be the next biggest invention because I'm like and I know some people that actually stop and dictate on whatever. But, yeah, when you're in the middle of the flow Yeah. And I'm like, oh my god. I'm I'm not gonna remember this by the time I ever I'm gonna run to whatever I'd like. I but it's yeah.

Melissa Henault:

No. I'm There needs to be a technology. Well, there are those glasses now, but I'm like, cause I'll be in the middle of a run and you can have all these profound downloads because you're moving your body and there's energy flowing through you and you can get so many downloads through that movement. So my team always is like, god forbid Melissa's out on a long run because all the ideas are coming out. God forbid I get some of those glasses that you can talk to that just start making the list for me.

Gisele:

Well, I mean, I tell you, the world would be so impacted by it because they're the best ideas. Yeah. And yeah. I I'm totally I totally agree. Totally agree.

Melissa Henault:

And so I wanna circle back for a minute before we wrap up with these two other questions I have because I love the work you do from an immigration perspective with allowing companies in the US to reflect the global market that we are in today. I know it's been a huge focus for us and our company, specifically, even with the clients we bring in and the scholarships we give out, is trying to make it reflective of the global market that we truly are. Can you talk a little bit more about the importance of that and some of these smaller business owners that are listening in on this today that are maybe a little bit more myopic into, like, who they're hiring and who they're bringing into their company and how it could potentially be impacting Mhmm. Their business and how they serve to a global market?

Gisele:

So various things to that, starting with going into a presidential election in, like, 60 some days. Who knows what that would bring? Whatever it brings, I also, I know my clients are kind of hesitant or worried because it could go whichever way.

Melissa Henault:

Mhmm.

Gisele:

I've been through a Trump immigration 4 years and, yeah, I tell you I was the best immigration attorney after those 4 years. Then I came out stronger and better. Yeah. Because it pushed me to be much better at what I was doing. So I tell my clients if they're listening to this or whoever, do not worry. Mhmm. It's not the politician. It's who are you working with.

Melissa Henault:

Mhmm.

Gisele:

And I am committed to whatever it is. I know from my heart that this country needs global I mean, I'm a perfect example. Global immigration brings strength innovation to this country. Yes. We're getting older. We don't have as many kids. Mhmm. It's just the workforce that we have will not sustain the economy that we wanna have or the country that we wanna live in unless we allow for some foreign talent to come in.

Gisele:

I'm not saying open the borders. I mean, I'm not for that. Mhmm. But I am for legal immigration that makes sense Yes. To bring in the diversity Yeah. That we need. Yeah. I mean, again, we we're the country that we are Mhmm.

Gisele:

Because of the diversity that we have from when we were founded. Yes. So back to your question, it is a complex process. Mhmm.

Melissa Henault:

It's

Gisele:

not for the faint heart. Mhmm. That's why many companies that potentially will benefit Mhmm. From having a foreign worker come into their workforce. Mhmm. Don't do it because it's really, really scary. They don't know where they're going into. Mhmm.

Gisele:

However, is it better to have an open seat more years, months, or whatever versus getting into this process. And if they have the right corporate immigration team behind them, there's no reason why they can do this. One of the items actually, and I know we're eventually, we're gonna talk about it, but I'm just gonna say it, it just fits. Yeah. On my LinkedIn profile, under Giselle Carson, there is a one of the guides that I have in there is key immigration terms key immigration terms guide, which I literally created about 3 or 4 weeks ago because I started to realize these terms are so common to me. I live with them every single day, perm, LCA. It's and my e b ones, and they're like they pretend, I think, sometimes that they don't wanna talk. And now I'm starting to realize maybe I should make a guide for this.

Gisele:

Yes. I've taken terms that are commonly used that for people to understand they even become a little bit more familiar with the vocabulary, it would be easier for them to understand what this is all about. But, again, I think immigration is here to stay Yes. For our country to be the global leader Yeah. That we have been and wanna be.

Melissa Henault:

I mean, it's how the country was founded. Absolutely. Absolutely.

Gisele:

Yeah. Yeah.

Melissa Henault:

So powerful. Where can people

Gisele:

access it again? So I wish I would know the whole, you know, the scripter, but it's under my so Carson LinkedIn profile. And on the Fisher section, there is a it's called key immigration terms guide.

Melissa Henault:

Okay.

Gisele:

Awesome. Yeah. They can And

Melissa Henault:

we'll have it in the show notes as well. So so good. Okay. Last question. I know we've hit on it a little bit, but as a member of my e 360, which is Elevate 360 Mastermind, it's all about elevating business and life Mhmm. From a 360 degree approach. Where do you feel that you have transformed the most this year?

Gisele:

Allowing a space into my life. See, I mean, it's one of those things. And for anyone that is listening, that is type A personality, go, go, go, slowing down for me sometimes is like I'm wasting time. I could be doing something else during this time. And now I realize it is so essential because that is when we process what we're learning. That is when we process where we wanna be. Mhmm. But it's hard.

Gisele:

It's hard for our I mean, for some people, it's perfect. I mean, we're all different. So it's kind of learning.

Melissa Henault:

For you and I, it is a it's work. It's work. It is. It really

Gisele:

is work. Yeah. And but it's, I have made it a practice to settle first thing in the morning, sit down, breathe. Yeah. Breathing has also been a huge learning Yeah. That I of course, we all breathe. But the the the purpose yeah. Purposeful breathing that allows your mind to settle Mhmm.

Gisele:

And allows for that space that you need for new ideas to come in. Yeah. That just has been tremendous. And I mean, your resources are just great. But for me, the biggest piece because I had, you know, I had I had a lot of the other components, and I think that's what that's it. That's why it's the E 360. It's just kind of filling in the areas where you're maybe missing on your I didn't even know that you were missing.

Melissa Henault:

So And it's seasonal too.

Gisele:

Like Yes.

Melissa Henault:

1 year. I know when you came into the mastermind, you were like, this is what I need. And then we got a couple of months in and you were like, no. Actually, this is what I need. Right? I know. Right? Yeah. So it, like, ebbs and flows. Yes.

Gisele:

Actually, on that note, something else that may be coming because I've struggled with doing a podcast Mhmm. Of my own. Mhmm. Kind of like this. And I started with a theme of corporate immigration made easy. And I I I still haven't launched it. I've I've created everything. I even did my first recording, and I was like, this doesn't feel right.

Gisele:

I have I have much more to give to the world that this doesn't encompass it. So I'm now looking at a much broader topic. My current theme is envision, joy and ease. And envision because everything that I've done, everything that we do starts with a vision. Yeah. I was fortunate to I did 5 Ironmans. The last one being Kona, the world championship. I trained, I qualified, I got there.

Gisele:

le? My husband had done it in:

Melissa Henault:

Yes. I love that. I guess my as we wrap up, I'll just say one of the things of the a million things I love about you is you have a very similar mindset as me when it comes to the parallels of the mental tenacity Yeah. To be an athlete is the same mental tenacity and discipline that you have to have in business. I often say to people, if you wanna start a business

Gisele:

Be an athlete first. Start with taking care

Melissa Henault:

of yourself. Because if you can't show up at the gym when you don't feel like discipline Yeah. And you can't when it's raining, you can't put your running shoes on, like, believe me, you are not gonna get things done when shit hits the fan at work, when things get difficult there. So you were an inspiration to so many to just grab the bull by the horns when it comes to your health, but also just your radical resiliency in your journey in life and the path that brought you to where you are to serve today. I know that probably at 15 years old in Canada, having to learn multiple languages in order to even get into college, at the moment, I'm sure at that age, you must have been like, why me? What have I but you were chosen

Gisele:

Yeah.

Melissa Henault:

For this path and who you serve today. And look at the ripple effect of impact economically, globally that you are making because of the path that you've been on. It's incredible.

Gisele:

Yeah. And, of course, part of all of that, my parents made the first decision.

Melissa Henault:

Oh, right.

Gisele:

You know, I would have still be in Cuba right now, but I'm not. I'm here. And that the support who you have around Mhmm. They tell you is the 5 the top five people around you that kind of have the most influence on you. I am so grateful for everyone that has been in my path. Good or bad. I've always I've learned from the experience. My family is absolutely amazing.

Gisele:

I adore them. My husband, like I said, we did everything that we did. I can guarantee you probably no one has done as much of Charlotte as we have done, and I've done it with pleasure. Yeah. I had actually one of the I'm past president of Jacksonville Bar Association Uh-huh. Which also had was a phenomenal experience. And a few weeks ago, we had a past president's reception. And people going were going around, what are your plans? Blah blah blah.

Gisele:

And I said, well, I've done 25 marathons. Boston, 5, which I'm planning on running again next year because I requalify in Sydney. I wanna do another 25 and I have my list. And he looked at me like, do you really like that? Yes. Every sounding yes. Yes. I love I mean, I live for that. It's like, when I put the next one in my calendar? Yes.

Gisele:

Yes. It's, again, who you have around you, the support people. And for me, my family, my husband, your whole team, my staff, I cannot do what I'm doing. I cannot have the impact that I have without them. I couldn't be here. So we just have to allow into our lives Mhmm. Who we need around us and who wants to be around us at a particular time

Melissa Henault:

That's right.

Gisele:

And allow space for that and allow space also to kind of people coming out as needed. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

Melissa Henault:

Oh, this is such a good episode, Giselle. You're just a shining light. You're an inspiration. Been so much fun. Where can people connect with you? Where's your preferred place for people to come find you?

Gisele:

Sure. They can come LinkedIn. Yeah. I don't have many places out there. LinkedIn is probably the main one. I also have the Marks Gray is my firm that I practice at. In that, they you know, we have a website. There's a whole section on immigration in there, but probably LinkedIn is the easiest.

Gisele:

Awesome.

Melissa Henault:

Alright. Well, thank you so much. It's been great.

Gisele:

Thank you so much. Yeah. This has been phenomenal. Thank you so much for everything you are doing for all of us and for the world.

Melissa Henault:

You guys are making the impact. It's awesome. It's incredible. Alright. Thanks, Giselle.
